The Inclusive Community: Jesus in Luke’s Gospel

A short course on the Gospel of Luke

The Gospel of Luke, from which we are reading this liturgical season, traces Jesus’ ministry to people on the outskirts of society, a ministry of invitation and of breaking down barriers.

Luke has the unique distinction of being the only New Testament writer who was not a Jew. Luke wrote to tell any earnest inquirer more about Jesus.

Luke was also a trusted companion of St. Paul, even staying with Paul through two years of imprisonment in Caesarea. He must have known all the great figures of the early church, and we can be sure that he had them share their stories with him. Luke, the writer, has a knack for vivid details. Some have called his gospel the best-written life of Christ.

Luke tells us that Jesus is here for Jew and Gentile, saint and sinner alike. He is the savior of the world. Some of what we’ll learn:

• Luke the historical figure and the world in which he lived.
• Why the biblical symbol of Luke is the calf.
• How Luke highlights Jesus’ concern for people’s healing and salvation.
• Why Luke is blunt about Jesus’ severe demands on those who become his disciples.

This study course focuses on the lectionary readings from Luke we will hear proclaimed during Sunday liturgies in 2022 and explores their meaning for our personal lives today.
