Today’s readings remind us that Jesus Christ is Lord and deserves all the honor and pageantry, all the pomp and circumstance we can give him this week. Yet this Lord loves us so much that he assumes a humble stance and lives as one of us, embracing all the suffering that we do.

That humility was demonstrated when he lived in simple circumstances in Nazareth and Bethlehem, as an itinerant preacher with nowhere to lay his head.

Today he lives among migrants, refugees, prisoners, the mentally ill and all people we place on the fringes of our society. He humbles himself by going out to them, rather than expecting them to come to him in some beautiful church.

We see this in the way he entered Jerusalem: riding on a colt. Not a horse. Not a chariot. On a donkey. How different that was from the cheers that greeted him. Jesus challenges us to assume the same attitude.

I invite you to choose one character to accompany through the mysteries of this week so that you can have an even more personal, deeper encounter with Jesus. Who will you choose to accompany?

• A person in the crowd who ushers Jesus into Jerusalem,
• The woman who anoints Jesus,
• The centurion who proclaims Jesus as the Son of God,
• One of the women who witness the crucifixion,
• Joseph of Arimathea who takes Jesus’ body down from the cross
• Someone else?
