Taizé is an ecumenical, meditative prayer experience using music, chants and scripture. We gather on the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. Each month we explore a different theme. The theme for September was "New Beginnings."

One form of biblical prayer is “lamentation.” Ours is a faith that can lament — lament before the face of God when our lives and the lives of others are harmed by forces beyond our control. Such lament, as the psalms teach us, is not the opposite of faithful praise but rather its partner.

In the Catholic tradition, tomorrow, Feb. 2, is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. In tonight’s Taizé Prayer Service we present ourselves to God. We invite God to work through us to make this world a better place: relationships, environment, etc.

At the Last Supper, Jesus prayed that all of us would be united in him. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated every year, from January 18-25. We reach across denomination divisions and pray with one another. We will have a local Ecumenical Prayer Service in Liberty Jan. 18. This Taize Service anticipates that prayer.

This month’s Taizé Service comes shortly after the U.S. national holiday, Labor Day, so this month, we take as our theme “Labor Day and The Dignity of Work.” Pope Francis has repeated said, “It is clear from the very first pages of the Bible that work is an essential part of human dignity.” We must protect it.

This month’s Taizé Service falls on May 4, which is also the annual National Day of Prayer in the United States. There are many things that we can pray about for our country. This evening, we will focus on peace and nonviolence. We pray for calm hearts and cool tempers
